Population Studies and Training Center

Undergraduate Opportunities

Throughout the years, the PSTC has been a key contributor to the university-college model that is at the heart of Brown University's liberal arts education.

As the preeminent campus center conducting quantitative social science research, we have played an essential role in training students at all levels in data fluency and data analysis in and outside of the classroom.

Brown University's undergraduates are frequently brought into PSTC faculty empirical projects, thus enriching the projects and providing invaluable training and exposure to young scholars.

The Certificate in Migration Studies, offered by the Population Studies and Training Center (PSTC) in partnership with the Department of Sociology, promotes a multidisciplinary understanding of migration and competency in a range of research methodologies.

The PSTC Undergraduate Fellows Program is an eight-week, paid summer fellowship that aims to prepare current Brown undergraduates to engage in rigorous empirical research in population studies, public policy, and related fields, in support of the center’s mission to produce evidence in support of efforts to improve public health and inform public policy.

The Leadership Alliance

The Center's partnership with the Leadership Alliance also brings undergraduates from other schools to the PSTC for the summer, where they receive mentoring along with theoretical knowledge and practical research training.

The PSTC frequently hosts Leadership Alliance participants during the summer months, providing undergraduate students from other institutions the opportunity to be mentored by leading scholars in their areas of research interest. Most recently, Siri Neerchal and Keren Herrán were& mentored by PSTC faculty, gaining theoretical knowledge and practical research training.

Siri Neerchal

Neerchal, a student in Mathematics and History at the University of Maryland, was mentored by Professor of Sociology Susan Short on a project measuring gender bias in a multidimensional framework.

Keren Herrán

Herrán, a student at University of Maryland Baltimore County, was mentored by Associate Professor of Health Services, Policy and Practice Omar Galárraga. They collaborated on a systematic review on technology-delivered sexual health education.
