PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] – Since 2009, the Brown International Advanced Research Institutes (BIARI) have gathered "participants from around the world to address pressing global issues through collaboration across academic, professional, and geographic boundaries" for two-week Institutes at Brown.

This year’s BIARI at Brown is taking place June 2-16, hosting more than 100 young scholars from approximately 50 countries to address issues in three Institutes: “Forced Population Displacements and the Making of the Modern World”; “Governance and Development in the Age of Globalization”; and “Social Entrepreneurship within Health and Humanitarian Innovation.”

PSTC faculty associates have long been involved with the program. Professor of Anthropology Matthew Gutmann serves as director of BIARI, and Professor of Sociology Patrick Heller is co-convening this year’s Institute on “Governance and Development in the Age of Globalization.”

The program has also moved off campus in recent years. As part of BIARI beyond Brown, Professor of Anthropology Daniel Smith is co-convening BIARI Kenya, which is taking place June 3-9 in Nairobi with a focus on “Health and Social Change in Africa.” The Institute, in collaboration with the African Population and Health Research Centre (APHRC), will address issues related to declining fertility, rapid rural-to-urban migration, and increased longevity in relation to disease and health systems in Africa.

Professor of Sociology David Lindstrom and PSTC Alum Silvia Giorguili Saucedo served as co-conveners for BIARI Mexico in January 2017, which focused on migration in the Americas.
